Pre-conference workshop: Advancements in Airport Asphalt and Concrete Pavement Materials, Design, Construction and Performance

Glendale, Arizona

Sunday, June 8, 2025

In 2020, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Asphalt Pavement Association entered a cooperative agreement with each other to advance asphalt airfields across the US. The first suite or projects have been completed and focus on tools and implementation strategies which can improve the performance of asphalt airfields. Participate in this workshop to learn how to use the new airfield binder selection tool as well as explore the future of balanced mix design for airfields.

The Airport Concrete Pavement Technology Program (ACPTP) is an industry-led, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) funded cooperative agreement focused on conducting applied research and technology transfer. The program identifies airport pavement issues and coordinates efforts to implement technologies and solve identified problems, intending to provide suggested changes to FAA Advisory Circulars. The program is managed by the National Concrete Pavement Technology Center (CP Tech Center) housed at Iowa State University. ACPTP aims to implement airfield pavement technologies that provide quality pavement, extend airfield pavement life, and provide technology transfer of new solutions, practices, and recommendations. The intent is to improve airfield sustainability, resiliency, reliability, efficiency, and safety. The program currently has 10 research projects underway at various stages with numerous others in the planning stage. This workshop provides attendees with a program update of the current research underway and provides the technology transfer of new concepts and guidance being learned through the research.
